About the Espresso Martini

The Espresso Martini is relatively young in the cocktail world. It was invented in London in the 1980s by famous bartender Dick Bradsell (he was also responsible for the Bramble and the Russian Spring Punch, among others) at the request of a now-famous supermodel. Rumour has it as Kate Moss; others say it was none other than Naomi Campbell. Unfortunately, Bradsell is no longer with us to confirm or deny either account.

Fast-forward 40 years and this coffee-fuelled cocktail is one of today’s most popular. Although Bradsell was a firm believer that the espresso used must always be fresh, today you’ll often find it made with cold brew or cold brew concentrate. Other modifiers, like crème de cacao or Fernet, are also sometimes added for an extra burst of flavour.

S-liquor Top Tip

This version stays relatively true to Bradsell’s original, regular sugar syrup can be swapped out for vanilla for a creamy, extra-delicious take. Garnish with fresh coffee beans for crunch.
